How can you remake “Oldboy”?!

Oldboy

I love Asian cinema but it took my friend, Amanda, breaking out her collection of dvds to really get me into some of the films I’d never heard of.

Like Oldboy. It’s the second in Park Chan-wook’s “Vengence Trilogy” but it was the first one that Amanda suggested that I see. After watching it I understood why. It’s brutal with its plot and twists. It can be hard to watch, and not just because of the violence, but because of the gritty situation and the realistic way it’s presented. And how can I not mention the amazing fight scene with the hammer? Seriously. It’s brilliant.

But if you’ve seen Oldboy and love it you might find yourself a little nervous at this latest bit of news.

Cheers for “Hobo With a Shotgun”

Hobo With a Shotgun

This weekend I happened to catch new Grindhouse film somewhat unexpectedly. At a gathering to welcome home a friend someone lamented that the new movie “Hobo With a Shotgun” would be at a local theater later that night. After a quick check we discovered that it was available to watch On Demand for $7. I’ve never seen a room of people whip out their wallets that fast but within moments there was a small pile of money on the coffee table and we started watching “Hobo With a Shotgun”.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights(short review)

The Green Lantern movie is quickly approaching. Recently there has been a Green Lantern Animated movie to go along with the Green Lantern Craze. The movie is entitled Green Lantern:Emerald Knights. Geeks might be excited to know(if they didn’t already) that  Nathan Fillion voices Hal Jordan. If your reading this then you are probably interested in hearing more about the quality of the movie. And no spoilers will be given so no need to fear.

I recommend: Movie Night!

Hey All. I am setting up a bi-weekly I recommend Movie Night!. Its for anyone who has Netflix and a Xbox 360.  Next Wednesday at 7CST/8EST will be the first one ever. We will be watching Kick-Ass. The day and time isn’t set in stone. I mean next week will be but might be on a different day and time the following weeks. There are currently 7 spots available.  Best way to reserve your spot is to comment on this post. I will tweet right before the Movie Night and if we have free spots available then I will inform everyone who follows me on my twitter account.  And you can send me suggestions for the next movie night on twitter, comment here, or send us an email at TheGeeksFTW@gmail.com. We hope you can make it!

The Next I Recommend Pick

The last episode of The GeeksFTW! we did not have a I Recommend section. I unfortunately have to say we will not have one next week either, but the week of June 13th we will return to our normal show style. This will include I recommend and the Geek Question of the Week. Pay attention to our twitter to find out what the question will be.  As for I recommend it is my pick. Finally netflix has put out the cult classic movie The Crow with the late Brandon Lee(son of Bruce Lee) on Instant Watch.  If this is your first time watching it then use the link I provided. There are a few sequels to The Crow but they are horrible. I wanted to post this to make sure no one watches those sequels on accident. Now all who wanted time to watch our picks before then show will have plenty of time to watch this movie. I will have lots to say about this movie. I’ve been waiting to talk about this since we started the Podcast so you’ll want to watch to know what I am talking about. And as always shoot us an email, tweet or comment about what you think of the movie, suggestions, or anything else you want to let us know. We value your feedback!

A fangirl’s review of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Now that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has officially opened I have no problems giving you guys my review. I’ll try to keep the spoilers to a minimum (with warning). I’m also going to ignore the whole 3D aspect as that’s a subject I tend to rant about too often. Instead I’ll stick to the movie itself and the score.

A few of my favorite horror movies

Silence of the Lambs

"Hello, Clarice..."

I’m a fan of horror movies but the ones I love most are the ones that are more psychological thrillers. I’m not opposed to blood, gore, guts and so on though unless it’s done just right I do get rather tired of it in excess. But I love movies that mess with your head. The reason this is on my mind today is thanks to watching one of those movies with a group of friends last night. After seeing it I felt the need to share some of my top favorite movies that don’t rely as much on gore but instead love to mess with your mind.

Don’t worry, I promise not to give any spoilers just in case there are folks who haven’t seen one or more of these movies.

More Dark Tower casting rumors!

Dark Tower

The Dark Tower

As a huge Dark Tower fan you guys know that I’m constantly listening for rumors and such of casting for the new miniseries/movie. The whole Javier Bardem as Roland thing still rubs me the wrong way (as that’s the only confirmed casting that I can find at the moment) but I’ll try to reserve my final judgment until I actually see his performance. For all we know he might be brilliant in the role.

But today I caught a whiff of another casting rumor from a friend on twitter. The source is IMDB which can be unreliable but it did make me cross my fingers in hope.

You can tell a lot by the opening credits…

Sometimes all it takes to suck me into a movie (or show) is a great opening title sequence. True, I adore movies where they don’t even show you the title or credits (or just a title) in the beginning but other times I love a well done opening sequence. I was thinking about that this morning and decided to post up some of my favorites ones from geeky things. Some are chosen based on music, others on the visual sequence and some for both. For today’s post I’ll stick with 5 in no particular order.

Enjoy!
