New Captain America Trailer

Yes, you heard right. The first full-length trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger has been released by Marvel, and I’ve gotta say that it’s looking mighty slick. Aside from that 30-second Superbowl spot, there hasn’t been a whole lot of actual footage, just a bunch of stills from the set. But tonight, the first theatrical trailer has been released on Youtube for all the world to see. Hit the jump for the video and my impressions.

“Robot” (aka Bollywood Terminator) is worth the watch

Robot

Dancing Cylons.

That’s apparently all you have to say to get people interested in watching a clip from the Bollywood film “Robot”.

There’s no good way I’ve found to describe the movie other than calling it a Bollywood crossover between I, Robot and Terminator. The movie itself is nearly 3 hours long and, as you would expect in a Bollywood film, has about 8 song & dance sequences. Heck, the fight scene that is the climax of the movie seems to go on for ages but only actually lasts about 30-45 minutes. In all honesty I think I made it through the entire movie only thanks to a large bottle of rum, the company of friends and a morbid curiosity to see how it would all end.

New Thor Trailer: Now With 50% More Awesome

New Thor trailer’s out, and it’s shaping up pretty well. Y’know, folks, I had my doubts. I was never the biggest Thor fan, and the first couple of trailers seemed okay, nothing special. I understood why the movie was necessary, since Thor’s a pretty key member to start off the Avengers, but I was always under the impression that this was bound to be the weakest film of the bunch. Now, I have hope. This trailer is a bit more plot-heavy than the past couple have been, so if you’re trying to avoid all story-related things in favor of experiencing them for the first time in the theater, then more power to you. For the rest of us, hit the link to watch the fresh trailer, and share your thoughts on it in the comments!
Thor will be releasing in US theaters on May 6th.

“Nothing But Trouble” – A lost classic

Nothing But Trouble

My love of strange movies often leads me to some that I wish I’d never seen. Other times it leads me to gems that I just have to share.

Nothing But Trouble is a hilarious comedy with a cast that includes Chevy Chase, Demi Moore, Dan Akroyd and John Candy (not to mention the Digital Underground). Essentially, four travelers get pulled over for a minor traffic violation (and failed attempt at evading a police officer) and are taken in the middle of the night to the reeve of Valkenvania for sentencing. Things only go downhill from there.

“The Dark Tower” on the Silver Screen – A Geek Girl’s Opinion

The Dark Tower

So…I’m listening to Stephen King’s Dark Tower series on audiobook and remembering all the things I love about the series. I’ve read the books countless times but until recently I only had the audiobook for “The Drawing of Three”. Now I’ve managed to get all of them and I’m currently listening to “The Wastelands”. Well…I’m listening when I’m on break or at lunch. Still, it’s good even in 10 minute doses and makes for perfect listening material while knitting Jayne Hats.

As much as I love the series I have to admit that I’m terribly worried about seeing it in a visual format. I mean, they’re talking about making a miniseries and movie out of the books and while I think it could definitely be interesting, I’m worried that they won’t be able to do it justice. The books are so complex and rich that I don’t think you can convey that all on a screen. My other huge concern is the actors that they’ll get to be in the movie.

“Your lives have ended. What you do with your new lives is entirely up to me.” – Gantz the movie

About a week ago I had the chance to see the new live-action Gantz movie on its one day showing here in the States. I had actually won a free pass from VIZ to see it here in Nashville (it was being broadcast live from LA to theaters around the country) and convinced a couple of friends to go with me. We braved the ice that was coating Nashville that night to check out a live-action movie based on a manga and anime that none of us were really familiar with. I’d seen the first few episodes of the anime about a year prior but hadn’t watched any since.

I do have to admit that part of the reason I was so excited to see it was that I discovered one of my favorite actors, Matsuyama Kenichi (who played L in the live-action Death Note movies) would be one of the main characters.

Well, the live intro to the movie was hosted by someone who definitely was not made to host such things. Honestly, I think we would have thrown popcorn at the screen if we’d had any. It was nice to see that they had the two lead actors (and their translators) brought up on stage for a quick intro and a reminder of a Q&A session after the movie. Then it started.

“I know what that music means!” – a new kind of horror with “The Room”

The Room

The Room

Looking for a movie that will make you stare at the screen in abject horror, wanting to tear your eyes away but unable to do so? I’ve got the perfect movie for you.

It’s not the newest Saw sequel.

It’s not a zombie flick.

It’s not even an odd numbered Star Trek film.

I’m talking about a film by Tommy Wiseau called “The Room”.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt cast for The Dark Knight Rises

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been in a variety of movies in the last few years. Some of his well known roles were in Inception(so I’ve heard), G.I.Joe:The Rise of Cobra, and 500 days of Summer. You may also remember him from the hit show 3rd Rock from the Sun. Well looks like Mr. Gorden-Levitt will be in the highly anticipated movie The Dark Knight Rises. Since Christopher Nolan has worked with Levitt before I’m sure he has a perfect part picked out for him. Sadly it will be unknown to us for the time being. Lets just hope Levitt doesn’t become Robin.

What’s not to love about zombie sheep?

Black Sheep

Sometimes you run across the most awesome things completely by accident. That’s how I ended up watching “Black Sheep”, a New Zealand horror-comedy a few years ago.

It’s hard to describe the movie other than with the phrase “mutant zombie sheep” but think of Evil Dead 2…only with sheep. Yep, it’s that hilarious.

The story starts out with two young boys on farm in New Zealand. One of them is out herding the sheep with his father. The old brother gets jealous and plays a horrible prank on the younger boy when he returns. The combination of that and some devastating news at the same time gives the younger brother a severe phobia of sheep. It then picks up 15 years later when the younger brother, Henry, is returning to the farm to sell his part of it to his older brother, Angus. Angus has become known for his work to breed a new type of sheep that will outshine the others. While this is going on, a pair of folks (who are very hippie-ish) are trying to break into Angus’ lab to steal evidence of what they believe to be dangerous and extremely harmful experiments.

“Your Majesty! SHE has returned to Oz!” – Remembering “Return to Oz”

Return to OzSometimes there are movie that frighten you so badly as a child that you are almost afraid to watch them again as an adult. Sometimes you pluck up the courage to watch them again and find yourself wondering what in the world was so scary about them.

Sometimes you watch them again and realize exactly why they were so scary back then and why they are creepy even now.

“Return to Oz” is one of the latter for me.

I remember being terrified of various parts of this movie when I was little. It’s probably the reason that I have a serious fear of psychiatrists and those weird electrical pulse machines they use in physical therapy. Yet after watching “Lady in White” which frightened me back then and now makes me wonder why I decided it was time to brave “Return to Oz”…with the help of a friend.

Over the holidays I sat down with my friend Amanda and we watched this movie that she had never seen all the way through and that I hadn’t seen in years.
