Review: Saint’s Row IV

Platform: Xbox 360

Score: 8 out of 10

Super Powered Prez

Super Powered Prez

Saint’s Row IV takes the craziness of Saint’s Row the Third and just adds more. In Saint’s Row IV you are the now the President of the United States and still leader of the 3rd Street Saint’s. Your homies from the last game are your cabinet members with some new and old faces thrown in; for example Benjamin King, whom we haven’t seen since the first Saint’s Row. You are about to get a speech when aliens attack and kidnap everyone. Then from that point on you are mostly in a computer generated simulation of Steelport, and a couple missions where you visit small sections of Stillwater. Whilst in this simulated Steelport the computer genius Kinzie is able to hack the simulation and give you super powers. No more need for cars then; in fact you can run so fast that you just blow them off the road. And since it’s an open world game with open world jank they go sailing off into the sunset.

The two Shaundis

The two Shaundis

The entire game is just reference after reference to either previous Saint’s Row games or other media. Because of the whole simulated world thing there are a lot of Matrix references. Even the Matrix training simulation is in Saint’s Row IV. The references to the Saint’s Row games of the past were really nice and I liked that. In fact it addresses a problem I had with a change in a character from Saint’s Row 2 to Saint’s Row the Third. I’m talking about Shaundi. The change from 2 to 3 was so big that she was a completely different person in 3. And nothing was said about it. In 4 SR2 Shaundi is a different character from SR3 and the interaction between them is pretty funny. While they couldn’t get Eliza Dushku to reprise her role they did get someone who sounds a lot like her. Another problem I had with 3 was Gat’s death. I didn’t know he “died” until the funeral scene happened. That was fixed in 4 too. Volition also brought back Keith David to do a voice but he’s not just (minor spoiler) Julius he’s also Vice-President Keith David. There are many time though the game comparing Keith David to Julius. Speaking of voices the special seventh voice in this game is Nolan North. Didn’t play with that voice though but I will on my second playthrough some day. Another thing that I really liked was that on some missions the gameplay changed completely to things like a text based adventure or a side scrolling beat-em-up and things like that.

saints-row-4-text-adventure-fragments-locations-guideNow let me talk about the negatives of the game. One major problem is that the game is running the exact same engine that Saint’s Row the Third did and that had some technical problems running at normal speeds now add super powers to that in super speed and super jumping and the game drops all frames. There were so many times where the game either got 1-2 frames per second or no frames per second and would just sit there, frozen. I heard that the PC version runs much better than the consoles for this issue. Then I encountered a bug multiple times where the game would stop responding to the controller. I have never seen this bug on any other game. I could pull up the dashboard and move through those menus but when I went back into the game it was like the controller wasn’t plugged in. This last one is just a personal issue I had with the game and I had this issue with the last game too. Not enough different clothing stores. In Saint’s Row the Third there was just Planet Saints and one or two other stores but you could buy all the clothes in the game pretty much at that one store. Now in 4 it’s called Planet Zin but it’s the same thing. What I really liked about 1 and 2 was you had to go to a jewelry shop for rings and necklaces and there was a high end one and low end one and the same with clothing stores. There were music shops and liquor stores and fast food places all those were gone in 3 and they are still gone in 4. Well Freckle Bitches (SR version of Wendy’s) is mentioned a lot in Saint’s Row IV.

All in all I would say it was a pretty good end to the Saint’s Row story. Volition said that if they do make a Saint’s Row 5 then it won’t be focused the same characters. I do not recommend this is the Saint’s Row that you start the series with. If you don’t want to go all the way back to Saint’s Row then at least start with Saint’s Row the Third. You will on the other have no idea who Julius, Tonya, Maro, or the gangs that make an appearance in Saint’s Row IV are, but at least you know most of the main characters in 4 that were introduced in 3. You will also miss out on Saint’s Row 2, which in my opinion is the best in the series.

Confessions of a First Time Convention-goer (GenConer)

Last weekend was GenCon. I’ve never been to any type of convention or expo or anything like that. I had next to no idea of what to expect. I want to talk about what I saw and what I did right and what not to do next year.

Moka from Rosario + Vampire

Moka from Rosario + Vampire

When I first parked my car I wasn’t actually sure where the convention center was but I had a general direction and when I saw a Jedi walking down the street I decided to follow him. I did have a good time at GenCon. I didn’t actually do a whole lot except for just sit and watch people/cosplayers walk by. The cosplaying was the first thing I really noticed and it was so awesome to see the Ox King walk by next to Goku and Super Android 17. Just behind them was Moka from Rosario + Vampire.

I did play some games. Battletech was one of those games and one of the very video games there. They had 12; I’m going to call them, emersion pods. It was a free-for-all mech battle simulation. There were 7 monitors each with their own display and function. I got my butt handed to me by people who had played this game before. I did walk through the rooms with arcade cabins and console games set up. People were playing Dance Central, Rock Band, Halo, Call of Duty, and things like that. But video games aren’t the focus of GenCon. The other kind of gaming is; board games, card games, D&D, and things of that sort.  I watched people play those games because I didn’t have a clue what was going on. There were a series of games that were set on a 20’ish long table. There wasn’t a board per se, but instead was green felt to simulate grass on a battlefield. When people

moved they used rulers and tape measures to judge how far they could go each turn. I had never seen a game like that but there were a lot of them. Apparently Warhammer is played that way. They were just fantasy styled either there was an American Civil War game that I sat down and watched for a bit. I did also play a game of tag. Yes tag. It was called Cards vs. Zombies. When you start you get a green band and three dart cards. Humans wear the band on their arm and zombies on their head. If a zombie tags a human then the human has to give up a dart card. If the human runs out of dart cards then they are now a zombie. If a zombie collects 75 dart cards then they can upgrade to a yellow band and humans have to give up two cards. If they collect 100 dart cards then they can upgrade again to a red band and humans have to give up three cards. I only saw one red and one yellow zombie the entire weekend I was there.  I snuck by the yellow zombie without him seeing me to immediately ran in a red zombie and he tagged me but I only had two cards left so I was zombified and the band moved from my arm to my head. Of course I only saw three humans all weekend after that.

Beyond that I hung out a bit in what was called “Anime Alley”. It wasn’t just anime though there were live action films shown in that area too. But mostly it was anime. There were episodes of anime being shown via Crunchyroll on a computer connected to a projector. I did poke my head into a couple rooms to see if a recognized the anime and I did a couple times. The only event that I knew about ahead of time and was looking forward to was the Mystery Anime Theater 3000 event. It was exactly what you think it was. Where Mystery Science Theater 3000 watches shitty sci-fi movies and does color commentary over it, Mystery Anime Theater 3000 watches shitty anime and does color commentary over it. The anime was Revolutionary Girl Utena. To which I do NOT recommend. This movie had no plot whatsoever. The movie ends with a lesbian, pink-haired, sword welding chick being sucked into a car wash that busts out of the ground on a floating rose garden and turned into a car. Yep she gets TURNED INTO A CAR. And her lesbian lover gets in a drives away.  So it was just gold to riff on. I look forward to that event next year. While wait for Mystery Anime Theater to start I saw a humongous line for something. It was for the screening of The Gamers: Hands of Fate. I didn’t find out until the next day that that movie was a sequel to Dorkness Rising, its full title is The Gamers: Dorkness Rising. Luckily the next day was a second showing. The first movie was about a group playing D&D, the Hands of Fate is a continuation of that group only one of them gets into a card game and that game takes him to GenCon. Hey, I’ve been there. That was the only thing I did on my second day. Afterward while walking back to the rest of the convention center I passed by the cast of the movie I just watched. I had to do a double take.

Lady Spy vs. Lady Spy

Lady Spy vs. Lady Spy

Over all I really enjoyed GenCon. Now it’s time to talk about what I did right and wrong. What I did wrong was wear the wrong shoes. I’ve had these shoes for years and they’re my everyday shoes. But there also a bit worn especially on the bottom. So now I have a blister on the ball of my foot. Another thing I did wrong, well not really wrong but something I regret, I went alone without knowing any one there. I know I would have had much more fun with a buddy or two there. Next year, I plan to rectify that. As well as look harder for events to attend. For events tickets are required. You can either get a ticket to make sure you get into an event if the room gets full, i.e. The Gamers: Hands of Fate screening. Or you can buy general tickets which all events take if they require payment. General tickets are $2 apiece, I bought 15. I only used 5. That was $20 wasted. I thought that all events required tickets but that was not true at all.

Someone call the Doctor. I saw a couple of them around.

Someone call the Doctor. I saw a couple of them around.

Now for what I did right. I took a backpack; pockets tend to get cluttered full quickly. In that backpack I took pain pills which I did use because of my feet, a phone charger I didn’t need but better safe than sorry, and I also took my 3DS. Because of where I live I’ve never Streetpassed before so I figured GenCon was a great place to try it out. Oh boy was I right. There were so many people Streetpassing that by the time I had done the puzzle collecting and adventuring with the first 10 I had 10 more just waiting to go. Eventually I had just shut my 3DS or I would have sat there all day just Streetpassing like a mofo. I did end up with over 100 people added to my plaza and manage to complete three puzzles and the larger ones at that. I was really surprised to get a Streetpass from someone from Japan.

I am defiantly going next year. But like I said I will try to talk some friends into going with me. I now know what to expect so I will be prepared next go around also I’ll have an idea of what to expect if I go to other conventions too. If you’re around the Indy area next year around GenCon time hit me up.

Why We Might Not Have Another Enterprise On TV Thanks to J.J. Abrams

The original Star Trek TV show was corny and cheap but people loved it and it spawned 6 movies, which only a couple of them actually good. What was great about those movies was that the cast that people knew for years from the TV show were in the movies. Same with the Next Generation, four movies came out of that series and once again the cast that people fell in love with were in the movies. J.J. Abrams has rebooted Star Trek into an alternate universe. That’s all fine and dandy because it proofs that people still like Star Trek. What we are missing is a currently airing Star Trek series. Here’s where the problems come in. Do you continue on the same alternate timeline of the Abrams movies or go back to the original timeline and create a new show from that? If you go from the alternate timeline do you remake the original five year mission which Into Darkness ends at the start of? If you do that, there’s no way you could get the cast from the movie, or do the really hard task of getting actors that can mimic the performances of movie actors.

Nero,_2258What we also don’t know is how the timeline was affected by Nero in the first movie. We now know that it caused the Federation to increase their exploration efforts more quickly than in the “Prime” timeline. Thus causing Khan to be awoken earlier and not by Kirk and the Enterprise. But how else was the timeline affected? Did the accelerated exploration maybe cause Q and the Q Continuum to be discovered earlier and perhaps lead to the discovery of the Borg sooner than the Federation was ready for. Because even in the “Prime” timeline the Borg were discovered sooner than fate designed because Q interfered. Maybe Picard decided to stay on his family’s vineyard or maybe Riker’s transported accident never happened.

There are just so many variables that that one event could have changed. Here’s something that did change because Wrath of Khan isn’t going to happen that means that Spock doesn’t die and get shot off into space and land on Genesis. Maybe the Klingons do steal the Genesis device or maybe they are stopped but not by Kirk and the Enterprise. That means Kirk doesn’t destroy the Enterprise to stop GWhaleprobe2Doc Brown and steal his bird of prey and then head to Vulcan to get Spock all better. This is why Kirk and company were not on Earth when the probe visited Earth looking for the humpbacked whales. Foreseeably that means that the Enterprise crew might have been on Earth and unable to stop the probe from destroying Earth by doing a sling-shot around the Sun. It looks like Nero not only destroyed Vulcan but destroyed Earth too. Think about it.

The only way I can see an Enterprise-focused TV show is if they do the Enterprise-C. Since it was only in one episode of TNG, not a whole lot is known about their missions except for their final mission at Narendra III. Maybe the Romulan attack didn’t happen at all. Maybe it did and we see the flip side the “Yesterday’s Enterprise” episode and see the Neo changes to the 24th century. But then again maybe Rachel Garrett did not become captain of the Enterprise-C.

That got me thinking, other than the part in Star Trek Generations we don’t know much about the Enterprise-B either. That could be another TV series that they could do. Maybe that first trip out of dry-dock to go around Pluto the Energy Ribbon destroyed the brand-spanking new Excelsior-class starship. Or maybe when Kirk saved the ship and didn’t get transported to the Nexus then help Picard take down Soren.

One possible concept for NCC-1701-F Enterprise

Those are the only two ways an Enterprise-focused TV show might have a chance. There are just so many maybes that now come from this alternate timeline that we don’t know and probably won’t be answered without a TV show. I really suggest a Star Trek that is not the focused on the Enterprise like Voyager and Deep Space Nine 9 were. But what I’ve wanted ever since Voyager went off the air was the adventures of the Enterprise-F or G or some later letter. In the Blu-ray of the Next Generations Movie Box Set one of the extras shows concept renderings of the Enterprise-F so that thought was out there at one point. I honestly don’t know why we don’t have a TV show on the air now. Now is the time with the new movies we have new fans and it’ll also be a way to remind old fans that Star Trek really isn’t dead out of the box office. Someone get on it please.

The Most Expensive Pre-order Edition Ever

saints_row_wad_wadNext week the highly anticipated Saint’s Row IV hits the shelves. The game has a couple special editions for sale like the Wub Wub Editions and the Commander and Chief Editions but there is only one Super Dangerous Wad Wad Edition. And this Super Dangerous Wad Wad Edition comes with some very interesting bonuses; a seat on the Virgin Galactic Space Flight, a seven night stay at the Burj-Al-Arab Hotel in Dubai, a Toyota Prius with one year insurance and a Lamborghini Gallardo, a “Spy Training Day” (whatever that is), don’t forget plastic surgery, and of course the Commander and Chief Edition of Saint’s Row IV. How much is the wonderful, only one in existence, edition? Why a measly One Million Dollars, my good boy. This kind of reminds me of the $190,000 Grid 2: Mono Edition that came with a real car that no one bought. But the difference is the Codemasters was probably serious about their Mono Edition while Volition, I don’t think, thinks anyone to actually buy the Super Dangerous Wad Wad Edition.

Xbox One Will No Longer Require A Kinect To Work

Yesterday IGN posted new questions in their ongoing AMA (Ask Microsoft Anything) article. One of the answers will come to great relieve to some. The question was “Since Kinect must be plugged in for the Xbox One to function, what happens if your Kinect breaks? Like if it falls off the top of your TV onto a hardwood floor or something? Will the console cease to function?” Marc Whitten, Chief Xbox One Platform Architect, answer with a bunch about how much the Kinect will greatly enhance the gaming experience, yadah yadah yadah. Basically still trying to sell the Kinect as something more than voice remote for Netflix and not answering the question. But then he goes on to add “That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor.” That’s right. The Kinect no longer has to be plugged in to work. All you haters can now shut up. HAHAHA. Like that will happen. I still stick with my ‘turn the damn Kinect around’ plan.

One of the other questions that were asked, worth mentioning, was about cross generational voice chat and how that won’t happen because of technical reasons. But you can still send text messages between consoles.

Geek Video: Breaking Bad Theme Played on Lab Equipment

The Breaking Bad theme played on Lab Equipment sounds really good actually. Better than the one on the show if you ask me.
