Microsoft Announces Home Gold For The Xbox One

When Microsoft did a flip flop on their DRM, here in at The GeeksFTW didn’t like the fact that we were, in turn, losing the family sharing plan. Microsoft has announced the Home Gold. It sounds like it’s a step toward what the idea of the family sharing plan once was going to be. A gamertag with a Gold account has to set a “home console” that account will continue to pay for their Gold subscription like usual. Then all the other accounts on that console will get “premium” access to multiplayer and other forms of entertainment that is locked behind the Xbox pay wall. What that means is that only one person has to pay for a Gold subscription per Xbox One for everyone to have access to the Gold account goodies. You can still use that Gold account to sign into your Xbox 360 without disrupting the Xbox One user. You can also go over to a friends house and sign into your account and have access to multiplayer even if your friend doesn’t have a gold account. Kind of like now only he can use his gamertag too. If a friend visits you at your house and you sign out then he still has access to online because that is your home console.

Hopefully this doesn’t completely throw out the idea of getting the family sharing in the future but it’s is a great way to save on Xbox Gold Memberships for the entire family.

Geek Video – What Geek Culture Needs To Strive For

This should be the manifest for Geek Culture.

Anime Review: Haganai

Score: 8.5

Genre: Comedy, Ecchi, School Life, Harem
Version: Dubbed
Episodes: 13
Where I watched it: Funimation

Synopsis: Kodaka Hasegawa, a tranfer student who accidental got the reputation of a thug on his first day, and Yozora Mikazuki, a bully who hates being called a bully, have trouble making friends. Since they are in their second year they feel that it’s too late to join a club because club friendships have already been formed. So Yozora comes up with an idea8275681619_043fbd973f_o to create a new club, The Neighbors Club. They are soon joined by Sena Kashiwazaki, a rich girl who hasn’t had any real friends, and Yukimura Kusunoki, who’s really a guy despite how he dresses. Their fifth member of the club is Rika Shiguma, a sex obsessed mad scientists who also makes any sexual innuendo she can. They are also joined by their club supervisor Maria Takayama, a ten year old nun who is rude and incredably immature, and Kobato Hasegawa, Kodaka’s younger sister and obessed with an anime called Fullmetal Necromancer. Their goal in the Neighbors Club is to find out to make friends and what it’s like to be a friend.

Media: Haganai, which is somehow short for Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, translates to ‘I Don’t Have Many Friends.’ It started as a light novel written by Yomi Hirasaka in August 2009 and is currently going with 8 volumes so far. A second light novel series called  Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai CONNECT; I can’t find any information about it. A manga series started a year later and is still ongoing. There is a second manga series called  Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai+ with only 2 volumes and is no longer being released. I can’t find anything information about it either. A PSP game called  Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai Portable was released in February 2012. Finally there is a second season of the Haganai anime called Haganai NEXT. There is no Funimation dub available at this time.

Rika "sexing" up the microphone at karaoke

Rika “sexing” up the microphone at karaoke

My Thoughts (minor spoilers): I will start off by saying this anime is rated for mature audience. There is some episodes with some nudity. One of my favorite character would be Rika and her ability to find a sexual innuendo in everything, including a train coupling. I do wish that there was more in the romance triangle that was hinted at. It may be in the second season but there is nothing more than hints in season one. The character that I found the least entertaining is Yozora because she really is really mean to people especially Sena. Another problem, is that by the end the characters didn’t seem grow in anyway. Yozura was still a bully and Kodaka was still dense.

It is funny how the rest of the school thinks that Kodaka is a thug all because he stumbled at the teacher on the first day and everyone thought that he was attacking her. And when he first meets Rika she talks about her like of rape porn and everyone thought that he raped her. I do also like Fullmetal Necromancer that Kodaka’s sister, Kobato, is into. It’s a play on one of my favorite anime Fullmetal Alchemist. Except it’s about a vampire, who Kobato is constantly dressing like.

If you don’t mind anime nudity and sex jokes then I would recommend this anime.

Anime Review: The Devil is a Part Timer

Score: 7.5

Genre: Comedy, Fantasy
Version: Subbed
Episodes: 13
Where I watched it: Funimation

Synopsis: The Devil (Satan/ Maou Sadao) and his army are defeated after trying to take over Ente Isla. He and one of his generals (Alciel/ Ashiya Shriō) escape through an interdimensional “Gate”. Instead of landing at their intended dimension they landed on Earth in modern times, and left with barely any magic energy left. Now in order to survive they tumblr_mm8fyc0mTe1s3k7jno1_500must make a living for themselves and that includes getting jobs. Where else would a person get a job with no work experience? Why at McDonald’s of course, well in this case MgRonald’s. Maou and Ashiya soon find out that one of the Heroes (Emilia Justina/ Yusa Emi) that defeated them followed them through the Gate as well. Yusa is all ready to kill Maō but she realizes that he’s not doing anything evil and is actual a nice guy who helps out his fellow coworkers. Soon they are joined by other people from Ente Isla, who are bent on destroying Satan no matter who gets in the way.

Media
: The Devil is a Part-Timer, or Hataraku Maou-sama! in Japan, started as a light novel series written by Satoshi Wagahara. The series started releasing in February 2011 and is still ongoing with 8 novels so far. A year later ASCII started publishing a manga version as well. The anime ran from April 4, 2013 to June 27, 2013. There was also a spin-off manga as well called Hataraku Maou-sama!Hai Sukūru! (High School). From what little information I could find online it seems like it’s the same story only their in high school. he’s not doing anything evil and is actual a nice guy who helps out his fellow coworkers. Soon they are joined by other people from Ente Isla, who  are bent on destroying Satan no matter who gets in the way.

My Thoughts (minor spoilers): The Devil is a Part Timer is a fun short comedy with two fights thrown in. I liked the minor romance story arc that was there and the fact that most people thought that Emi and Maou were a couple, when in fact if there was a couple in this anime it would have been Chiho and Maou. But he didn’t seem too interested in Chiho beyond that she was a co-worker at MgRonald’s. I did also like the fake company names that were a clear reference to a real company; MgRonald’s is McDonald’s, Sentuky Fried Chicken is Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Jungle.jp is Amazon.jp.

Lucifer vs Satan. Yes they are two different people.

The only thing that I was confused about was that in Ente Isla, Satan was supposedly this bad guy, but when he came to Earth he was a nice guy. We don’t know if there was a difference in his behavior or not. Maou and Ashiya’s landlady was also a bit of mystery as well. She seemed to know who they were but it was never explained how she knew. In fact she goes on a trip to Hawaii early on in the series and never came back. I could have done without Ashiya being sick in most of the episodes. It made me feel like he was a useless character that took up room and food in their one room apartment. And he didn’t have a job save for one episode so he really was a useless character that did not need to be there.

I kind of did like the fact that almost each episode was self-contained. The problem with that is that it felt like the story could have just kept going. There was no big finale, the last episode felt no different than the rest. The anime just ends. If there was more of an ending, a sense of conclusion, then my score could have been higher, maybe a 8.0 or 8.5. As you can tell from my score that it isn’t the best anime but it’s not bad, it’s just entertainment
