“Someone’s mining my ore?!” – Watching “The Guild”
My friends get me hooked on all the cool stuff.
Earlier this month my friend, Amanda, came over and brought a couple of dvds with her of a show that she said we had to see. I’d heard about “The Guild” but to be honest, I had no idea what it was even about. When she mentioned that it was about gaming my ears totally perked up. She explained it was a webseries that was still running. Knowing how much I loved Dr. Horrible and all of Red vs. Blue I figured it couldn’t be too terrible.
It only took a few minutes for me to be giggling like a five year old girl. As a gamer girl, and one that enjoys playing World of Warcraft (yep, I play WoW), it was awesome to see Felicia Day as the main role of Codex, a gamer with an addiction and major anxiety. Though the characters constantly use gaming lingo such as “aggro”, “DPS” and “macros”, the humor of the series is easily understood even by non-gamers. I might have been the only one in the room that knew what those words meant, but all three of us couldn’t stop laughing.
I swear I’ve known gamers that are exactly like many of the characters in the series. Heck, I’ve even got some qualities in common with Codex (Healers unite!!).
As a bonus, season 3 brings a new guest star: Wil Wheaton. A utilikit wearing Wil Wheaton. I may have disliked him as Wesley Crusher years ago but even I have to admit that he grew up to be pretty darn hot (especially in that kilt).
While you can watch the series for free on the web (and you can stream it through Netflix) the dvds have extras that are worth the price tags (outtakes, commentaries and more). You can find seasons 1&2 in the same set and seasons 3 & 4 as their own separate dvds. Season 5 is currently in production. Me, I’ve got seasons 1-3 and am waiting on season 4 to arrive.
You can read about it on the Wiki but I suggest that if you enjoyed Dr. Horrible, if you play WoW or other MMORPGs or just like a good laugh, watch The Guild before reading about the plot. If you’ve already watched it, what do you think of it? Do you know gamers like that? Are you a gamer like that?
And how can you not love a line like “First I had Husband Aggro and then I had Baby DPS!”
