Review: Saint’s Row IV
Platform: Xbox 360
Score: 8 out of 10
Saint’s Row IV takes the craziness of Saint’s Row the Third and just adds more. In Saint’s Row IV you are the now the President of the United States and still leader of the 3rd Street Saint’s. Your homies from the last game are your cabinet members with some new and old faces thrown in; for example Benjamin King, whom we haven’t seen since the first Saint’s Row. You are about to get a speech when aliens attack and kidnap everyone. Then from that point on you are mostly in a computer generated simulation of Steelport, and a couple missions where you visit small sections of Stillwater. Whilst in this simulated Steelport the computer genius Kinzie is able to hack the simulation and give you super powers. No more need for cars then; in fact you can run so fast that you just blow them off the road. And since it’s an open world game with open world jank they go sailing off into the sunset.
The entire game is just reference after reference to either previous Saint’s Row games or other media. Because of the whole simulated world thing there are a lot of Matrix references. Even the Matrix training simulation is in Saint’s Row IV. The references to the Saint’s Row games of the past were really nice and I liked that. In fact it addresses a problem I had with a change in a character from Saint’s Row 2 to Saint’s Row the Third. I’m talking about Shaundi. The change from 2 to 3 was so big that she was a completely different person in 3. And nothing was said about it. In 4 SR2 Shaundi is a different character from SR3 and the interaction between them is pretty funny. While they couldn’t get Eliza Dushku to reprise her role they did get someone who sounds a lot like her. Another problem I had with 3 was Gat’s death. I didn’t know he “died†until the funeral scene happened. That was fixed in 4 too. Volition also brought back Keith David to do a voice but he’s not just (minor spoiler) Julius he’s also Vice-President Keith David. There are many time though the game comparing Keith David to Julius. Speaking of voices the special seventh voice in this game is Nolan North. Didn’t play with that voice though but I will on my second playthrough some day. Another thing that I really liked was that on some missions the gameplay changed completely to things like a text based adventure or a side scrolling beat-em-up and things like that.
Now let me talk about the negatives of the game. One major problem is that the game is running the exact same engine that Saint’s Row the Third did and that had some technical problems running at normal speeds now add super powers to that in super speed and super jumping and the game drops all frames. There were so many times where the game either got 1-2 frames per second or no frames per second and would just sit there, frozen. I heard that the PC version runs much better than the consoles for this issue. Then I encountered a bug multiple times where the game would stop responding to the controller. I have never seen this bug on any other game. I could pull up the dashboard and move through those menus but when I went back into the game it was like the controller wasn’t plugged in. This last one is just a personal issue I had with the game and I had this issue with the last game too. Not enough different clothing stores. In Saint’s Row the Third there was just Planet Saints and one or two other stores but you could buy all the clothes in the game pretty much at that one store. Now in 4 it’s called Planet Zin but it’s the same thing. What I really liked about 1 and 2 was you had to go to a jewelry shop for rings and necklaces and there was a high end one and low end one and the same with clothing stores. There were music shops and liquor stores and fast food places all those were gone in 3 and they are still gone in 4. Well Freckle Bitches (SR version of Wendy’s) is mentioned a lot in Saint’s Row IV.
All in all I would say it was a pretty good end to the Saint’s Row story. Volition said that if they do make a Saint’s Row 5 then it won’t be focused the same characters. I do not recommend this is the Saint’s Row that you start the series with. If you don’t want to go all the way back to Saint’s Row then at least start with Saint’s Row the Third. You will on the other have no idea who Julius, Tonya, Maro, or the gangs that make an appearance in Saint’s Row IV are, but at least you know most of the main characters in 4 that were introduced in 3. You will also miss out on Saint’s Row 2, which in my opinion is the best in the series.
Anime Review: Haganai
Score: 8.5
Genre: Comedy, Ecchi, School Life, Harem
Version: Dubbed
Episodes: 13
Where I watched it: Funimation
Synopsis: Kodaka Hasegawa, a tranfer student who accidental got the reputation of a thug on his first day, and Yozora Mikazuki, a bully who hates being called a bully, have trouble making friends. Since they are in their second year they feel that it’s too late to join a club because club friendships have already been formed. So Yozora comes up with an idea to create a new club, The Neighbors Club. They are soon joined by Sena Kashiwazaki, a rich girl who hasn’t had any real friends, and Yukimura Kusunoki, who’s really a guy despite how he dresses. Their fifth member of the club is Rika Shiguma, a sex obsessed mad scientists who also makes any sexual innuendo she can. They are also joined by their club supervisor Maria Takayama, a ten year old nun who is rude and incredably immature, and Kobato Hasegawa, Kodaka’s younger sister and obessed with an anime called Fullmetal Necromancer. Their goal in the Neighbors Club is to find out to make friends and what it’s like to be a friend.
Media: Haganai, which is somehow short for Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, translates to ‘I Don’t Have Many Friends.’ It started as a light novel written by Yomi Hirasaka in August 2009 and is currently going with 8 volumes so far. A second light novel series called  Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai CONNECT; I can’t find any information about it. A manga series started a year later and is still ongoing. There is a second manga series called  Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai+ with only 2 volumes and is no longer being released. I can’t find anything information about it either. A PSP game called  Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai Portable was released in February 2012. Finally there is a second season of the Haganai anime called Haganai NEXT. There is no Funimation dub available at this time.
My Thoughts (minor spoilers): I will start off by saying this anime is rated for mature audience. There is some episodes with some nudity. One of my favorite character would be Rika and her ability to find a sexual innuendo in everything, including a train coupling. I do wish that there was more in the romance triangle that was hinted at. It may be in the second season but there is nothing more than hints in season one. The character that I found the least entertaining is Yozora because she really is really mean to people especially Sena. Another problem, is that by the end the characters didn’t seem grow in anyway. Yozura was still a bully and Kodaka was still dense.
It is funny how the rest of the school thinks that Kodaka is a thug all because he stumbled at the teacher on the first day and everyone thought that he was attacking her. And when he first meets Rika she talks about her like of rape porn and everyone thought that he raped her. I do also like Fullmetal Necromancer that Kodaka’s sister, Kobato, is into. It’s a play on one of my favorite anime Fullmetal Alchemist. Except it’s about a vampire, who Kobato is constantly dressing like.
If you don’t mind anime nudity and sex jokes then I would recommend this anime.
Anime Review: The Devil is a Part Timer
Score: 7.5
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy
Version: Subbed
Episodes: 13
Where I watched it: Funimation
Synopsis: The Devil (Satan/ Maou Sadao) and his army are defeated after trying to take over Ente Isla. He and one of his generals (Alciel/ Ashiya ShriÅ) escape through an interdimensional “Gateâ€. Instead of landing at their intended dimension they landed on Earth in modern times, and left with barely any magic energy left. Now in order to survive they must make a living for themselves and that includes getting jobs. Where else would a person get a job with no work experience? Why at McDonald’s of course, well in this case MgRonald’s. Maou and Ashiya soon find out that one of the Heroes (Emilia Justina/ Yusa Emi) that defeated them followed them through the Gate as well. Yusa is all ready to kill MaÅ but she realizes that he’s not doing anything evil and is actual a nice guy who helps out his fellow coworkers. Soon they are joined by other people from Ente Isla, who are bent on destroying Satan no matter who gets in the way.
Media: The Devil is a Part-Timer, or Hataraku Maou-sama! in Japan, started as a light novel series written by Satoshi Wagahara. The series started releasing in February 2011 and is still ongoing with 8 novels so far. A year later ASCII started publishing a manga version as well. The anime ran from April 4, 2013 to June 27, 2013. There was also a spin-off manga as well called Hataraku Maou-sama!Hai Sukūru! (High School). From what little information I could find online it seems like it’s the same story only their in high school. he’s not doing anything evil and is actual a nice guy who helps out his fellow coworkers. Soon they are joined by other people from Ente Isla, who  are bent on destroying Satan no matter who gets in the way.
My Thoughts (minor spoilers): The Devil is a Part Timer is a fun short comedy with two fights thrown in. I liked the minor romance story arc that was there and the fact that most people thought that Emi and Maou were a couple, when in fact if there was a couple in this anime it would have been Chiho and Maou. But he didn’t seem too interested in Chiho beyond that she was a co-worker at MgRonald’s. I did also like the fake company names that were a clear reference to a real company; MgRonald’s is McDonald’s, Sentuky Fried Chicken is Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Jungle.jp is Amazon.jp.
The only thing that I was confused about was that in Ente Isla, Satan was supposedly this bad guy, but when he came to Earth he was a nice guy. We don’t know if there was a difference in his behavior or not. Maou and Ashiya’s landlady was also a bit of mystery as well. She seemed to know who they were but it was never explained how she knew. In fact she goes on a trip to Hawaii early on in the series and never came back. I could have done without Ashiya being sick in most of the episodes. It made me feel like he was a useless character that took up room and food in their one room apartment. And he didn’t have a job save for one episode so he really was a useless character that did not need to be there.
I kind of did like the fact that almost each episode was self-contained. The problem with that is that it felt like the story could have just kept going. There was no big finale, the last episode felt no different than the rest. The anime just ends. If there was more of an ending, a sense of conclusion, then my score could have been higher, maybe a 8.0 or 8.5. As you can tell from my score that it isn’t the best anime but it’s not bad, it’s just entertainment
Review: Injustice: Gods Among Us
Platform: Xbox 360 Â Â
Score: 8.0 out of 10
Injustice Gods Among Us is a fighting game made by the Mortal Kombat people over at NetherRealms. Instead of Mortal Kombat characters, DC characters are the ones dooking it out. This isn’t the first time that NetherRealms has used the Super Friends and such. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was released in 2008 and got an average review on Metacritic (7.6). But Injustice stands on its own against the rest on NetherRealms games.
Like the last two Mortal Kombat games, Injustice Gods Among Us has a fully fleshed out story mode and is really good. You know exactly why Cyborg is fighting Raven and why Harley Quinn is fighting alongside Batman. I do recommend reading the prequel comic series that DC Comics released before the game. The story before the game is basically, the Joker did something really bad and Superman decides he’s had enough and kills the Joker and addresses the U.N. for everyone to put their weapons down or else. Sups then becomes judge, jury, and executioner for the world. The comics are even going to continue after the game’s story as well. As like any Mortal Kombat game there is a “challenge towerâ€, in which you fight a random assortment of characters plus a boss at the end, in this case it’s Superman. After beating Superman at the “top of the towerâ€, you get a short little story of what happened to that character after the events of Injustice. Some of those stories are so-so but others, i.e. Nightwing becoming a yellow lantern, are ‘Oh Wow’ moments.
The voice acting is pretty good. Many are some familiar voices and some are new. Kevin Conroy and Tara Strong are reprising their roles as Batman and Harley Quinn. The voice of the Joker is unfortunately not Mark Hamill but Richard Epcar does a really nice job in his stead. Some of the voice actors are only heard if you unlock a certain costume. Steven Amell [Arrow] can only be heard if you unlock the Arrow costume for the Green Arrow.
Even though it’s made by NetherRealms, Injustice’s controls don’t feel like a Mortal Kombat-style of game, in fact it feels like a Street Fighter game. Don’t get me wrong you can still get the never-ending combos of Mortal Kombat. It’s the controls that feel Street Fighter-esque. For example to do Batman’s Grappling Hook (reverse Scorpion Spear) move it’s a quarter circle on the joystick, actually almost every character in Injustice uses a quarter circle forward and quarter circle back special move. Most
special moves are just really simple to pull off. The backgrounds that the characters fight in aren’t just something pretty to look at. All of them have something that a fighter can interact with. Whether it be throwing a dumpster or hoping on the Batpod at Wayne Manor or sending someone into the Phantom Zone in the Fortress of Solitude. Every character also has a “powerâ€. For example Batman calls in bats that he can send at he’s opponent, Aquaman covers himself in water and it decrease the damage taken. Some characters that use weapons like Nightwing just switch to a different weapon.
The only problem I have with the game is the online play can be cheap. A lot of players online put people like Deathstroke who have
good long range attacks and stand on one side of the screen and just shoot the other player until they win. Another, not really a problem but would have been nice, is the challenge stages aren’t voiced, it’s text only.
The game is good, I recommend playing it. But as far as buying it…only if you really like fighting games. It is a defendant rent. You can finish the story and get what you want out of it in a day or two.
Book Review: Sword Art Online Volume 1
Score: 9.5 out of 10
If you’ve listened to either last week’s GeeksFTW podcast or this week’s I Recommend podcast, you’ve heard me talk about the anime Sword Art Online {SAO}. This has become my new favorite anime, along with Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. After I finished watching the show I wanted more. I’ve recently started reading the books. As of this review I’ve only finished the first book. I was going to review the anime itself [Everyone who likes anime should watch it. There quick review] but I realized that less people have read the books and would get more out of a book review. There are going to be minor spoilers in this review.
Video Game Review: SimCity
Platform: PC Â Â
Score: 7.0 out of 10
SimCity is the first new Maxis SimCity game in 10 years, so there were some high expectations. For those 5 of you who don’t know what SimCity is, it is a city management simulation. Where “you” are the mayor of a newly founded city and you can make that city into any kind of city you want it to be. From a sprawling metropolis to an industry heavy, high pollute dump. You place police stations, fire stations, hospitals, everything except the factories or commercial buildings or homes for the Sims themselves. You can raise and lower taxes, zone for residential, industry, and commercial, and do all the things that go on in city hall.
Video Game Review- Crysis 3
Platform: Xbox 360 Score: 9.1 out of 10
I jumped in the Crysis franchise with Crysis 2. I remember watching a friend play the original Crysis on his gaming PC almost 6 years ago. I was shocked with how amazing it looked as well as the game play of it. It was a completely different experience from any game I had played. Since I didn’t(Still don’t) have a PC capable of gaming I jumped on the chance to play Crysis 2 on my Xbox 360. I really enjoyed Crysis 2 and when Crysis 3 was announced I was excited. You can tell my reactions from the score above, but keep on reading for more details.
Review: Witch and Wizard series (audiobook)
Witch and Wizard is about a teenage witch and wizard who try to stop an evil wizard from brainwashing the world with his “New Order.†If you read user reviews about the Witch and the Wizard series you would see reviews like “Harry Potter knockoffâ€, “Fake Harry Potterâ€, and so on in that fashion but those reviewers never actually read the books just the synopsis. The only comparison that I saw from this series to the Harry Potter series is that there is a witch and there is a wizard and there are ghosts. That’s it. Oh and the the bad guy can also use magic. No magic school, non magic users are not referred to as such, no one even taught said witch and wizard how to use magic they figured out how to use “M†on there own. They do get advice but it’s cryptic advice, Yoda style.
