Pax East 2016- PlayStation VR Impressions

I’ve heard a lot of people give their opinion on Virtual Reality. A lot of those people haven’t even experienced VR and say it is just a gimmick. I’ve had the pleasure of trying the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and most recently the PlayStation VR.

This was not only my first experience with PlayStation VR, but it was my first experience with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Move. I have to say I was pretty impressed with the PlayStation VR. I figured the experience would be totally different then the other headsets due to less computing power of the PS4 versus a High-End PC. There were some noticeable differences and I will get into that below.

The demo I played was Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. It is a on-rails shooter based on Until Dawn. It is very similar to House of the Dead and Time Crisis. You ride in a cart on a track and go through the demo shooting enemies, ammo boxes, security cameras and other objects. There are a couple types of enemies and a few different weapons. Overall it was a fun demo and I was glad that was the demo I got to try out with PlayStation VR.

Comfort:

The PlayStation VR was pretty comfortable. I wore it for about 15-20 minutes and it didn’t feel heavy or that noticeable after a few minutes. I was able to wear the PlayStation VR over my glasses with it still being comfortable.

Visuals:

It looked good. It had a 1080p resolution, but is split vertically to have 960 x 1080p to each eye. It works all things considering, but there is a noticeable difference compared to HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. That being said this is VR for a console so it is understandable that it is not on par with PC just like console games don’t have as good of visuals as PC games do.

Experience:

It took some time getting use to using the PlayStation Move as the controller. You have to keep your hands in front of you in order to see the two guns you have in the game. You have to move it around to aim as well as shake the controllers to reload. I also had to force myself to actually look around and shoot enemies on my left or right instead of looking straight ahead and turning the camera in a regular game. Also there would be times where you had to dodge certain items or get hit and lose health. It ran smooth for the most part. I did have a couple moments when the game froze for a couple seconds. I am not sure if that was game related or the hardware side.

I also think PS4 owners will have a great time with the PlayStation VR if more games take the time and create great experiences like Rush of Blood was for me. I am definitely thinking about getting a PS4 a lot more since experiencing the PlayStation VR.

Finally! Sony’s NGP (PSP2) Details

The NGP (PSP2) is finally here. Sony revealed its brand new PlayStation Portable at an event in Tokyo today, our first official look at the PlayStation maker’s next foray into handheld gaming, the NGP or “Next Generation Portable.” First details, just click for more.

PSP2? In your Dreams

Back around November low quality photos surfaced from VG247 of one of the PSP2 rumored development kits. From what could be made out from the grainy, sketchy looking images was some pretty surprising and interesting features if these were indeed real.

Delightful Downloadable Deals

Like many other gamers and geek aficionados I’ve had the “wait & see” mentality concerning buying DLC, games, and movies this year. It seems as though everything gets replaced, sequalized, or clearance so quickly there is no need or advantage to purchase early (unless you have a special interest in something, like Mass Effect lol). Well due to Thanksgiving weekend once again Microsoft and Sony are slashing the pricing on a lot of there digital content which will all be offered good through November 29th.

PlayStation Move Initial Thoughts

When Sony showed off PlayStation Move, I like many other people assumed it was just a Wii HD. That was until I had the chance to play it on release day. Upon playing Move, in my local game store, I left the store utterly bewildered as to how good Move is and how Sony could have essentially let it slip under the radar. Needless to say I bought the Move starter bundle and Sports Champions a week later (they aren’t bundled together here in the UK).

I have been playing Sports Champions almost exclusively since I picked the bundle and game up and I am in love. Although more specifically I am in love with Table Tennis and that is what I have been exclusively playing. I firmly believe that both the Table Tennis game and PlayStation Move together are the perfect way of proving the capabilities of motion control in games. I also firmly believe that until one tries PlayStation Move with Table Tennis, from Sports Champions, then one cannot truly know what Move can do. This isn’t to say that the other games in Sports Champions are not great. They are all brilliant but the Table Tennis is the true stand out of the bunch. Archery is a lot of fun although I personally couldn’t play it for extended periods of time. It’s surprising how fast my arms got tired. The Gladiator battle is also brilliant, especially if you just want to kick the crap out of something.

The small tweaks to Move over the Wii are what make it so great. Having the PS Eye instead of a sensor adds another level of depth to the experience. This is because instead of just registering the controller like the Wii sensor does the camera uses the Move to establish where you are in the room. For example when playing Table Tennis you quite literally have to run back and forth in order to hit the ball. This isn’t all the time however it does make the game incredibly fun when your opponent flicks the ball over the net and you have to run forward in order to hit it back.

I have said it before but I believe that Move is essentially Kinect and the Wii mashed together. Sony has taken the Wii and made it as close to 1:1 as is maybe possible at this time and they have taken Kinect and added buttons. This makes for the best gaming experience when it comes to motion controls available. It obviously may be beaten in November but I don’t see that happening.

As a quick side note I have tried the demos for the likes of The Shoot and Heavy Rain and they control beautifully aswell. So much so that I now plan on picking up Heavy Rain because I prefer the Move controls to the standard controls. How the Move controls work in other ‘normal’ games remains to be seen but so far I am very impressed.

If you are interested in Move (I assume you are if you have read this far) then I strongly recommend you find a store near you that has a demo set-up. Try the Table Tennis.

You will be able to Kinect for $150 this fall

Poor puns aside, this morning Xbox Live’s Major Nelson broke the news on his blog that the Kinect motion sensor for the Xbox 360 will be $150 and come bundled with Kinect Adventures. Alternatively, You can get a bundle with one of the new 360 Slims (with a 4 GB hard drive) for $299. Of course, Sony already announced their pricing and bundles back at E3 ($100 for camera, motion controller, and game, or $399 for all that plus a PS3), although none of those come with the $30 navigation controller that players may or may not be needing in the long run.

So, Kinect comes out of the box multiplayer-capable, while the Move bundle only enables one player. Though, if you already have a Playstation Eye, then that price may be even less. So what do YOU think, readers? Kinect or Move? Dance Central or Sorcery? Perhaps both? Perhaps neither? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Retro Rocket: Resident Evil 2

In all the years I have been playing games there has not been a game I anticipated more than Resident Evil 2. I was a big Nintendo fan back in the day and did not immediately buy into the PlayStation when it first came out. After a few late night sessions with the original Resident Evil at a friend’s house though, I worked my butt off at a crappy retail grocery job to save up the funds to get a PS before  RE2 came out. I actually remember reading gaming magazines on my breaks at work that talked about the game and just dreaming of what it would be like.

When it finally came out I went to Wal-Mart, money in hand, and then walked out with a brand new PlayStation and the game. It is one of my happiest gaming memories. I remember rushing home and hurriedly ripping open the box to hook up everything up. I had even made sure to schedule the next day off so I could have maximum time with the game. I put a lot of effort into getting to play RE2 and oh…oh how I was not disappointed. I can never tell you the sheer amount of hours I have put into RE2 but I can tell you that all you have to do is mention the game and I can hear various pieces of the soundtrack in my mind.

What set RE2 apart from it’s previous game was scale. Everything was bigger in this game. In RE1 you fought your way though a mansion, in RE2 you fight your way though a city, a police station, a sewer, and more. The police station alone was easily as big if not bigger then the entire mansion. Instead of two or three zombies on screen you could have huge packs of them. You can get backed into a corner really quickly and the game likes to keep the pressure on. Unlike the first game you discover VERY early on there is more to the outbreak than zombies and you are kept on edge with fewer breather moments. The best example of this is the very beginning of the game. Rather then place you in a safe mansion hall, you start on a burning street in the middle of a pack of zombies.

RE2 also differs in tone from the first game. While both are video game equivalents to B-movie or George Romero type zombie movies, the first game is more like a mystery while this one is more of a thriller. That tone is set from the start as the goal quickly becomes just to find a way out with all other goals fading to the background. In every room you can see turned over furniture, strewn papers, phones off hooks, and other signs that only a short time ago horrible things were happening as people faced their end.

The music in this game also adds a layer of tension. It is somber, disheartened, and sad. It enforces the tense and desperate situation your in. It only lets up rarely when you meet with your comrades again, but the dark atmosphere ramps back up when your forced to go it alone. Sound actually plays an important role in the game. Each enemy has it’s own distinct sound so if you listen you can tell what is around the corner..and shudder in fear when you realize your dealing with a huge pack of zombie dogs. I can remember climbing down a ladder and walking a bit, then hearing the pitter-patter sound of paws and cursing.

RE2 delivered on every level for me and to this day stands as the benchmark game of the series. Every other game has had to compare itself to this one. You will not find more game for your money then or now. Thanks to it’s “zapping” system each character had their own disc. Depending on what order you played them in significant elements in the story would change. Leon A / Claire B would be a very different experience than Claire A / Leon B. Also, playing Leon first and making certain decisions could help or hinder Claire during her game and vice verse. While each character’s B game sent you to basically the same places but in a different order, it added a new boss and quite a few totally new areas. Actually, only by playing though an A then B scenario could you even see the true ending of the game. In addition to that there were two unlockable mini-games you could play if your game Ranking was high enough. In later versions a third mini-game was even added.

Resident Evil 2 was one of the best looking games during the original PlayStation era. I know it does not hold up against the newer games but if you have never played it, please find a way to. It is a very important game in the history of gaming and one you should say you have played.
