Pax East 2016- PlayStation VR Impressions

I’ve heard a lot of people give their opinion on Virtual Reality. A lot of those people haven’t even experienced VR and say it is just a gimmick. I’ve had the pleasure of trying the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and most recently the PlayStation VR.

This was not only my first experience with PlayStation VR, but it was my first experience with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Move. I have to say I was pretty impressed with the PlayStation VR. I figured the experience would be totally different then the other headsets due to less computing power of the PS4 versus a High-End PC. There were some noticeable differences and I will get into that below.

The demo I played was Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. It is a on-rails shooter based on Until Dawn. It is very similar to House of the Dead and Time Crisis. You ride in a cart on a track and go through the demo shooting enemies, ammo boxes, security cameras and other objects. There are a couple types of enemies and a few different weapons. Overall it was a fun demo and I was glad that was the demo I got to try out with PlayStation VR.

Comfort:

The PlayStation VR was pretty comfortable. I wore it for about 15-20 minutes and it didn’t feel heavy or that noticeable after a few minutes. I was able to wear the PlayStation VR over my glasses with it still being comfortable.

Visuals:

It looked good. It had a 1080p resolution, but is split vertically to have 960 x 1080p to each eye. It works all things considering, but there is a noticeable difference compared to HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. That being said this is VR for a console so it is understandable that it is not on par with PC just like console games don’t have as good of visuals as PC games do.

Experience:

It took some time getting use to using the PlayStation Move as the controller. You have to keep your hands in front of you in order to see the two guns you have in the game. You have to move it around to aim as well as shake the controllers to reload. I also had to force myself to actually look around and shoot enemies on my left or right instead of looking straight ahead and turning the camera in a regular game. Also there would be times where you had to dodge certain items or get hit and lose health. It ran smooth for the most part. I did have a couple moments when the game froze for a couple seconds. I am not sure if that was game related or the hardware side.

I also think PS4 owners will have a great time with the PlayStation VR if more games take the time and create great experiences like Rush of Blood was for me. I am definitely thinking about getting a PS4 a lot more since experiencing the PlayStation VR.

Killzone 3: Single Player demo coming

Finally, time for Playstation 3 owners to get some early, free time with an upcoming shooter. Sony plans to release a free demo of Killzone 3’s Icy Incursion level, which takes place about halfway through the game, next month.

Gamers, get off the controller crutch

In light of the recent motion gaming releases such as the Sony Playstation’s Move and Microsofts Xbox Kinect the internets have been set a-blaze in regards to whether or not these pieces of technology are the next  push forward in interactive gaming. As Geeks, and its culture alike you would think we would want a more innovative step towards total immersion, yeah…. not so much.

PlayStation Move Initial Thoughts

When Sony showed off PlayStation Move, I like many other people assumed it was just a Wii HD. That was until I had the chance to play it on release day. Upon playing Move, in my local game store, I left the store utterly bewildered as to how good Move is and how Sony could have essentially let it slip under the radar. Needless to say I bought the Move starter bundle and Sports Champions a week later (they aren’t bundled together here in the UK).

I have been playing Sports Champions almost exclusively since I picked the bundle and game up and I am in love. Although more specifically I am in love with Table Tennis and that is what I have been exclusively playing. I firmly believe that both the Table Tennis game and PlayStation Move together are the perfect way of proving the capabilities of motion control in games. I also firmly believe that until one tries PlayStation Move with Table Tennis, from Sports Champions, then one cannot truly know what Move can do. This isn’t to say that the other games in Sports Champions are not great. They are all brilliant but the Table Tennis is the true stand out of the bunch. Archery is a lot of fun although I personally couldn’t play it for extended periods of time. It’s surprising how fast my arms got tired. The Gladiator battle is also brilliant, especially if you just want to kick the crap out of something.

The small tweaks to Move over the Wii are what make it so great. Having the PS Eye instead of a sensor adds another level of depth to the experience. This is because instead of just registering the controller like the Wii sensor does the camera uses the Move to establish where you are in the room. For example when playing Table Tennis you quite literally have to run back and forth in order to hit the ball. This isn’t all the time however it does make the game incredibly fun when your opponent flicks the ball over the net and you have to run forward in order to hit it back.

I have said it before but I believe that Move is essentially Kinect and the Wii mashed together. Sony has taken the Wii and made it as close to 1:1 as is maybe possible at this time and they have taken Kinect and added buttons. This makes for the best gaming experience when it comes to motion controls available. It obviously may be beaten in November but I don’t see that happening.

As a quick side note I have tried the demos for the likes of The Shoot and Heavy Rain and they control beautifully aswell. So much so that I now plan on picking up Heavy Rain because I prefer the Move controls to the standard controls. How the Move controls work in other ‘normal’ games remains to be seen but so far I am very impressed.

If you are interested in Move (I assume you are if you have read this far) then I strongly recommend you find a store near you that has a demo set-up. Try the Table Tennis.

September=Awesome!

We had so many great games, movies and so much more come out at the beginning of the year. So much that I’ve heard people wonder if the 2nd half would be able to deliver the goods. Well I’m going to give you a quick glimpse of whats coming out in September. I believe this is probably the best month of the year for entertainment and here is why:

Theater Releases

Machete– Sept 3-What started out as a spoof trailer for the movie Grindhouse has become a highly anticipated movie.

Resident Evil:Afterlife-Sept 10- I know most gamers think these movies are horrible, but if you can step away from the games and look at it as just a movie they are enjoyable. This one is the 4th in the series and is suppose to use the same 3D cameras that made James Cameron’s Avatar a unique visual experience.

Blu-ray/DVD Release

Killers-Sept 7- I cant personally say much about this movie. It looks to cater the female audience more then male.

MacGruber-Sept 7-Yet another comedic Spoof movie. Though it didn’t look good enough to see in theaters I’m sure it will be a decent rent and maybe it will be on Netflix Instant Watch soon

Letters to Julliet-Sept 14-Again this is another movie that would attract the attention of the female audience.

Prince of Persia:The Sands of Time-Sept 14- Yet another video game movie that has been thrashed with bad reviews. This is another movie I plan on renting to see how it is for myself.

Robin Hood– Sept 21- What was suppose to be Gladiator 2 ended up turning into another movie about the one and only Robin Hood.

Get Him to the Greek-Sept 28-A summer comedy that kept getting great reviews from word of mouth. I for one am looking forward to watching this.

Iron Man 2-Sept 28- The Sequel to one of the best Comic book movie adaptations. Personally I enjoyed it and look forward to adding it to my collection

Music

Kid Rock-Born Free-Sept 7

N.E.R.D.-Nothing- Sept 7

Linkin Park– A Thousand Suns- Sept 14

Weezer-Hurly- Sept 14

Maroon 5-Hand All Over- Sept 21

Ne-Yo-Libra Scale- Sept 21

Doobie Brothers-World Gone Crazy-Sept 28

Ice Cube-I Am the West- Sept 28

Jimmy Eat World-Invented- Sept 28

Video Games

Borderlands DLC-ClapTrap’s Robot Revolution– The release date isn’t clear, but it has been said to release in September. This will be the 4th dlc for the popular co-op shooter/RPG and is said to be the biggest yet.

Spider-Man:Shattered Dimensions-Sept 7- I know the latest Spider-man games haven’t been the best, but this one looks promising. I’m most excited about the story of it and how the 4 different spider-men will play out.

Cabela’s North American Adventure-Sep 7- I know you might think this is a joke. Its true that odds are you and I are not going to be interested in this game but apparently these games are selling well since they keep releasing them every year.

Halo Reach-Sept 14- Say what you want about Halo, fanboys, and whatever the facts remain that Halo is one of the most popular multi-player gaming franchise

Playstation Move-Sept 17- Again odds are not a lot of us “Hardcore” gamers will be picking this up, but this is a big release in the gaming industry. It will show whether or not motion control gaming will work on the “Hardcore” consoles.

Sid Meier’s Civilization V-Sept 21- Seems like this has been one of the highly anticipated PC game to come out this year. The series has a big following and a reputation for being a fun RTS.

Dead Rising 2– Sept 28- Zombies Zombies Zombies. Lots of people are tired of Zombies. Well I think they will make an exception for this game. Not much to say,but its a sequel to one of the best Zombie games of this console generation.

Plants Vs Zombies-Sept 28- This of course is the Xbox 360 version of the crack like addictive game from Popcap. I have already purchased this on PC and iPod Touch. This will make 3 different versions of the game I have purchased. Safe to say I am probably not alone.

Final Fantasy XIV– Sept 30- I personally am not too excited about this, but I know lots of people are looking forward to this MMO. This is just the PC version. If there is a free trial I will most likely give it a shot, but it is a popular franchise so had to mention it

Overall this month is going to be really good. There is a large variety of entertainment options for everyone. Good thing September is just around the corner.
