A Geeky New Years Resolution

I am not one to do New Years Resolution, but I have been meaning to get certain things accomplished/ change things. Why not make a commitment during the time everyone else does? Why Am I writing about this you might be thinking? Because My New Years Resolutions involve the site/podcast. So without further rambling here they are:

1)Provide more content for the site- Writing reviews about Games(some new and some new to me that I’m catching up on), Movies, Television, Comics/Books, and Tech. I have a back log of games. movies, TV shows and a few comics that I need to complete and will share with you the readers/ listeners. 2011 I plan on acquiring many tech gadgets and will review and share.

2)Expand TheGeeksFTW- I will try to look for more dedicated writers and hopefully get enough content for each Categories of the the Geek Culture instead of just one or two. Possibly add another podcast to the website that focuses on stuff that TheGeeksFTW doesn’t.(If anyone has ideas, suggestions or interested in starting one please contact me)

3)Get the listeners/Readers involved- Bring more guests on the podcast, run more contests, incorporating feedback into the show, and much more.

Overall: I want to grow a community around TheGeeksFTW, give people more reasons to listen, read, and participate with the podcast and website, and above all Entertain You our readers and listeners. So here is to a Geeky 2011!

GeeksFTW DEALS OF THE WEEK

I thought i’d start a little weekly post highlighting two of the best deals available each week. The deals can be anything from video games to Blu-Rays and I’ll post one for the US and one for the UK. Sorry to anybody else but I can’t cover the whole world. So without further ado the first two deals of the week!

Prince of Persia HD Collection

Price: £17.98
Where: Amazon.co.uk http://www.amazon.co.uk/Prince-Persia-Trilogy-HD-PS3/dp/B0042X8V48/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1293826943&sr=8-5

This is the deal that inspired me to start this, hopefully, weekly post. The Prince of Persia series is arguably one of the best gaming franchises ever. The games are consistently great and for roughly £6 per game you aren’t paying much of a premium for the HD and trophy goodness. If you were thinking about buying these games then I’d recommend that you act fast as Amazon is well known for having fluctuating prices day to day. It is also worth noting that if you are in the US and are looking to import the collection this is most likely the best price you will see for a fair amount of time.

Fallout: New Vegas

Price: $34.99

Where: Amazon.com

360 Link: http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-New-Vegas-Xbox-360/dp/B0028IBTL6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293827006&sr=8-1

PS3 Link: http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-New-Vegas-Xbox-360/dp/B0028IBTL6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293827006&sr=8-1

What can I say? Amazon has great deals. It won’t be like this every week. I promise. Now, Fallout: New Vegas, despite what anybody says about glitches, is a brilliant game. Now that the majority of the glitches have been fixed, most specifically the save game glitches this game is a must own. At $34.99 on both platforms this game is a steal. Also check Fallout 3 if you are new to the series. It is available in a gamestop bargain bin for around $9.99 near you.

I hope that these deals give you an excuse to buy a new great game. If you have any deals that you think deserve a post in the future send me a message on twitter @360cookie

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm – Thoughts so far….

Apologies for my lack of articles on the site the last few weeks, this is due to two things, first one is the release of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the third expansion pack to the most widely played Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game in history.  The second one is the arrival of my baby daughter who kindly gave me 10 days of playing Cataclysm before making her entrance to the world.

This will not be a generic review as in my mind WoW is a game that can be played in so many ways and attracts people for so many reasons whether you are a hardcore raider, a PvP maniac or a die hard roleplayer there is something for everyone and it would be impossible to cover everything.  Instead I will go over what I have experienced so far and how it measures up to the hype.

Christmas Eve Post:Top 5 Christmas Movies

Christmas is probably my favorite time of the year. I love eating the traditional Christmas type foods, playing in the snow(if we are lucky enough to get any), shopping for unique gifts for my love ones, but my favorite part of Christmas would have to be watching Christmas movies. Some of these movies mean so much to me because I have watched them every year since I was little, and I don’t hold back during this time. This article, if you couldn’t guess already, will be about my Top 5 Christmas movies, why they are so great, and a short video clip from the movie. Hopefully you are already familiar with these great movies and this article along with the video clips brings back some good Christmas memories and encourages you to watch these great movies with your family.

Not your father’s Christmas music – Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Seven years ago I was introduced to a new way to listen to Christmas music. I was invited to see a Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert.

Since that first concert I’ve managed to not miss a single year of their Winter Tour through Nashville. For the past few years I’ve gone on my own but had the advantage of being to afford a single floor seat rather than a less expensive seat in the risers. The last two years they’ve allowed photography and I’ve taken full advantage of that, totally loving capturing the show in digital photos.

But every year I get asked the same question: “Why do you pay so much for a ticket? It’s just an orchestra.”

My response is always incredulous. It’s so much more than just an orchestra. Even without seeing a single show you can hear on their albums (both the Christmas and non-Christmas ones) how different they are from a regular orchestra. I love classical music. I adore it, I grew up with it, I play it on flute and it never gets old for me. I also have a love of rock, of wailing guitars and of amazing guitar solos.

Now imagine the two combined.

TSO

TSO manages to bring new life to songs that we’re so used to hearing in other, more traditional ways. Seriously, this really is the only Christmas music I can listen to at any time during the year and still smile and enjoy it. Their non-Christmas albums (“Beethoven’s Last Night” and “Night Castle”) are brilliant as well and totally break out some of my favorite classical pieces and put a new spin on them.

But even that might not explain why I spend over $50 for a single floor seat each year.

That is perhaps best explained in the photos I’ve taken. They capture single moments of an absolutely breathtaking show. No matter where I’ve sat for the show, it’s been amazing (though I’ll admit the floor seats are pretty wonderful for photo taking) and I’ve never failed to scream myself hoarse by the end of the night. Even if you’re not big into Christmas music, you should give them a listen and then check out the show when it passes through your neighborhood.

After all, when you have hot men playing electric guitars while wearing tuxes and headbanging…it’s no longer “just an orchestra”.

It’s an experience.

(this post brought to you by Elf who adores Trans-Siberian Orchestra possibly a bit too much)
